What is Acidity?

Uploaded on: 17 June 2023

When the gastric glands in the stomach produce an excessive amount of acid, it is referred to as acidity. Typically, the stomach produces hydrochloric acid, which aids in the digestion and breakdown of food. When a person experiences acidity, they may suffer from symptoms such as indigestion, a burning sensation in the chest, abdominal discomfort, stomach ulcers, and a burning sensation. Factors that contribute to acidity include dietary errors, stress, smoking, alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, and an unhealthy lifestyle.

Additionally, acidity can affect individuals who consume a high amount of meat or spicy and oily foods. While certain medications can help reduce acidity, it is recommended to consult a doctor before taking any medication.

People with acidity problems often experience symptoms such as a burning sensation in the chest after eating, followed by a burning sensation in the stomach and acid regurgitation. Occasionally, they may also suffer from bloating and indigestion. Making lifestyle changes and improving dietary habits can help in managing acidity. There are also some home remedies that can provide relief from acidity.

The symptoms of acidity include:

  • Burning sensation in the stomach
  • Burning sensation in the chest
  • Nausea
  • Acid regurgitation
  • Sour taste in the mouth
  • Bloating
  • Indigestion

The causes of acidity can include:

  • Excessive consumption of meat and oily, spicy foods
  • Smoking and alcohol consumption
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Stomach disorders

To prevent acidity, you can follow these measures:

  • Avoid consuming spicy and oily foods.
  • Include plenty of vegetables and fruits in your diet.
  • Stay well-hydrated by drinking an adequate amount of water and fluids.
  • Chew your food thoroughly and eat slowly.
  • Avoid lying down immediately after meals. Maintain a minimum gap of at least 3 hours between meals and bedtime.
  • Consume items like tulsi leaves, cloves, and fennel seeds.
  • Try to avoid taking medications unless necessary.

Surgical intervention

  • Surgical intervention, or surgery, may be necessary in certain cases when other treatments have been ineffective or when the symptoms persist despite prolonged medication use. Sometimes, long-term medication use can also lead to unwanted side effects.
  • When an individual is not willing to undergo long-term medication treatment, surgical intervention can be considered as an alternative. Through surgery, the size and pressure of the lower esophageal sphincter (the valve in the esophagus) can be corrected, reducing acid reflux. Surgery can also be a viable option for individuals experiencing difficulty in swallowing due to narrowing of the esophagus.
  • It’s important to note that the decision to undergo surgery should be made after careful consideration and consultation with a healthcare professional who can provide a thorough evaluation of the condition and discuss the potential risks and benefits of the procedure.
