Everything about spine care

A disc is a cushion between two vertebrae (a soft cushion of tissue between the bones in your spine). It is called an Intervertebral.

Anatomy of disc: structure of disc

Annulus fibrosis : The outer covering of the mattress which strengthens the mattress

Nucleus pulposus : This is the internal secretion. It does not allow shocks to reach the spine. It works as a ‘shock absorber’. This mattress keeps the body flexible.

What is a sleep disc?

When the mattress between the two vertebrae slips back and puts pressure on the nerves, there is excruciating pain from the waist down to the legs or from the neck to the arms. It is also known as sleep disc or sciatica. It has four stages.

Stage-1(Disc degeneration)

In this, the discharge decreases. Affects the cushioning of the spine.

Stage-2 (Disc prolapse)

In this, the disc ruptures and the fluid comes out and puts pressure on the nerves.

Stage-3 (Extrusion)

In this too, the mattress ruptures and the discharge comes out, putting direct pressure on the veins.

Stage-4 (Disc Sequestration)

This involves a piece of the slipped disc separating from the main disc and onto the nerves and begins to pressurise it.

What are the reasons?

■ sedentary lifestyle

■ Obesity

■ Vitamin deficiency (B12, D3 and C)

Smoking, alcohol, tobacco use

■ Fast food / packaged food

■ Improper sitting posture

■ An injury during exercise

■ Excessive use of mobiles, computers.

■ Lack of exercise

What are the symptoms?

■ Neck / back pain

■ Lumbar pain radiating to legs

■ Pain in neck radiating to arms

■ Tingling / numbness in hands / feet

■ Urinary incontinence.

Diagnosis

■ Examination by a specialist doctor.

■ X-ray, MRI examination

■ Blood and vitamin deficiency examination

Treatment

■ Most herniated disc patients can recover without surgery.

■ Complete rest is required during severe pain.

Regular exercise: Bhujangasana, swimming, walking in the swimming pool, improve posture.

Traction and Belt : In modern treatment

It does not play an important role.

Pain Block Therapy : This is a non-surgical treatment method through injections. Where the vein is blocked, medication is released to reduce the swelling in the vein and the mattress. This treatment method is useful to avoid surgery.
