Do you know your mouth type? Are you using the right dental products?” Shopping in the supermarket often depends on the influence of advertising. If our favorite actor or actress is promoting a product, we don’t think much before buying those products. Today, Is your toothbrush, toothpaste or mouthwash really right for you?

Before choosing any product be it shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste or mouthwash, the first and foremost thing is to understand your body, skin or mouth type. Through years of advertising and education from dermatologists, people are now understanding their skin type. And choosing hair and skin care products accordingly. But, we are still far from understanding the oral types and types of these products.

Basically, the types of oral health are divided as follows and individual care needs to be taken accordingly. 

  1. Caries-Prone Mouth – High probability of tooth decay despite following a daily dental hygiene routine.Problems – Improper quality of enamel on teeth, disturbed salivary structure, dietary issues, other medical conditions like ‘Vitamin-D’ deficiency, GERD etc. Dental Products – Min.   2. Sensitive Mouth – Sudden sharp sensitivity after eating cold or hot food. Problem – Multiple teeth have thin layer of enamel, exposed root structure, can also be caused by aggressive brushing and flossing. Dental products – Ultrasoft toothbrush, toothpaste with calcium sodium phosphosilicate, potassium Mouthwashes containing nitrates.
  3. Dry Mouth – dryness of the tongue, lips and basically the whole mouth even under normal conditions. Problems – dry mouth and bad breath due to aging, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, cancer treatment and certain medications. Dental products – alcohol free mouthwash with glycerin, regular oil pulling , ‘SLS’ free toothpaste containing Xlyitol.
  4. Mouth with misaligned teeth – Teeth are misaligned, crooked, backward or spaced. Problems – Tooth-jaw shape discrepancy, delayed eruption of baby teeth and eruption of permanent teeth. Dental products – Mouthwashes containing sodium fluoride, orthodontic and interdental toothbrushes, containing potassium nitrate. Toothpaste.
  5. Bleeding Mouth Type – Gums often bleed while brushing or eating in the evening. Problems – Swollen gums due to plaque and calculus, advanced stage of gum infection, vitamin-C and K deficiency and bleeding disorders. Dental products – containing benzydamine. Mouthwashes, toothpastes containing stannous fluoride and gum astringents containing tannic acid.
  6. Prosthetic Mouth – Caps or bridges on more than 4 teeth in your mouth after root canal treatment or implants. Problems – All caps and bridges in the mouth can re-infect and cause underlying bone loss. Dental products – Regular flossing, interdental brushing to control plaque and calculus formation. , toothpaste containing zinc sulfate. Before purchasing dental health care products, it is very important to understand these active ingredients and how they work on your teeth, gums and other tissues. Maintain regular dental care and a healthy smile by using the right products!
